Day 10, Monday 31, December 2007
The team traveled to a couple of villages in Kharagpur (a city near Kolkata) with Pastor Chukraworthy of Oasis Ministries. We were able to see the difficulties he went through in establishing some of these village churches. It was incredible to see the cultural traditions and barriers that had to be broken (and the miracles it took for that to happen) in order for people to accept Christianity. In one village, the village bunyon tree, which was part of the village worship ritual and had not been cut for hundreds of years, was cut in order to make space for a new church building! We were also able to visit an orphanage run by the Pastor's son and daughter-in-law. The needs of this orphanage were great, even greater than the needs in Lucknow. We were able to bless the children with the wonderful supplies from our “missing” luggage. Our plan was to give the supplies at another location, but God knew where the need was and allowed our luggage to be “delayed” and arrive in Kolkata for these kids. We were also able to bless the children with clothes, and provided funds to build a fence to protect the house where the orphan girls lived. In the evening, we spend some time at Pastor Chukraworthy’s home where he shared his incredible testimony of going from a convicted murderer to a servant of God with a heart to share the Gospel. |
